the bell calleth
and the scavengers converge
to kneel down with guilt
to avert the scourge of the church

the cleric emerges
and with him the acolytes
the holy scripture rests heavy on the altar
and the scent of incense quickens the congregation’s appetite

out of habit or out of fear
a redeemer myth is all they want to hear
a distorted legend, retold whenever the bells begin to chime
an ancient gospel, corroded by the sands of time

they hunger for blood
and they scream for death
they hear „hoc est corpus meum“
and they devour the flesh

and the heirs of Saint Peter smile
because for every sheep they snatch there is a coin to pile
until the treasure rooms are overfilled
and somewhere deep within the golden domes restless the souls of martyrs roam
